Interview With David Capper, Sales Manager Of Simply Online

Michelle Jones, Project Manager for Simply Online Services caught up with David Capper recently to pick his brains about working in Sales and in the online recruitment advertising industry...

David, you are the Sales Manager of Simply Online Services: tell me more about your role and when you started working for the group.

I started working for Simply Online Services on the last day of February 2005. At the time the sites we operated were slightly antiquated so the first big job was to over haul the sites. Once this was in place the company went from strength to strength.

What is your background and what attracted you to the company/job?

I left Manchester University with a degree in business studies. The problem with this is it is very general. I had no idea where I should work. I started off in estate agency during the property boom which was interesting. The job was not for me due to the fact morals seem to go out of the window when buying and selling houses. I then went to work for dabs.com as an account manager which I much preferred. As I had noticed how difficult it was to find jobs when you leave University, Simply Sales Jobs seemed like a great idea. It has since been proved that it is a great idea/product.

How has the role changed since you joined?

My job role has changed dramatically over the past couple of years. I was the first person to be employed by Simply Online Service so things have changed 10 fold. We now have 12 members of staff working from our Preston office and 10 from our head office in Brighton. I now manage the sales team in the Preston office which means I get involved in far more meetings and spend time with my Sales director discussing future projects. Recruiting Media Sales Executives and training them is also a bigger part of my job than ever before.

Any characteristics and skills you have that you believe are particularly suited to what you do?

The people that work in the recruitment industry seem to be like minded people who are easy going but straight to the point.

What do you love about your industry?

The Online jobs industry is a growing sector which means there are changes happening all the time. The technology used within jobs boards are constantly improving which allows us to sell better products to our clients. The industry also allows you to build close friendships with clients, which makes working that much more enjoyable.

Favorite aspect of your work?

Dealing with the sales team in our office on a daily basis is great as everyone gets along so well. The culture of the company in my opinion is right. We concentrate on quality of calls as opposed to number of calls. We definitely don't have a call centre environment. I also enjoy the fact I am allowed to get on with job and do it my way.

Most frustrating part of your job and/or industry?

The most frustrating part of the job for is trying to explain to people within the industry that we are now one of the biggest Niche job companies in the UK. We seem to get treated as a small company which isn't true as we now own and operate 12 niche job boards.

What would you do, as a career, if you weren't working in the Media Sales industries?

I would probably have spent more time building up my 'firstweddingdance' company. Yes it's true - I run this with my Sister (she is the dancer in the family) and we choreograph couples first dances at their home. I deal with the business side of things. We have teachers all over the UK. Problem is we are both so busy with our main jobs we never seem to get chance to push it.

Outside of work, do you have any unfulfilled ambitions?

I am still awaiting my call from Sir Alex Ferguson to be pushed into the first team. As this seems less and less unlikely as the years go by I am setting my sights on more realistic targets such as paying my mortgage off ASAP.

Favorite tipple?

Stella followed closely by vodka redbull chaser.

What was your new years resolution and have you stuck to it?

As per normal I had the best intentions to become a fitness fanatic however January passed and it all went down hill once again as per normal. I still have a gym membership which makes me feel better even if I don't go.
